Cherry Magic has been trending since the release of its trailer. This is not only because it is an adaptation of a highly popular Japanese manga, but also because it marks the return of Thailand’s beloved OG BL actors, Tay Tawan Vihokratana and New Thitipoom Techa-apaikhun, as a couple. Here is our review of Cherry Magic Thai BL series.
Cherry Magic Thai: The Making
Cherry Magic is directed by X Nuttapong Mongkolsawas (director of Vice Versa) and written by Manow Waneepan Ounphoklang (F4, Wednesday Club), Mook Jarinee Thanomyat (The Gifted, Enigma) and PingPong Suwanun Pohgudsai (F4).
I have mixed feelings about their previous works (not a fan of Vice Versa and Wednesday Club). After watching the first episode, I think co-writing will make it better.
The creators have tried to adapt it to suit the Thai cinematic landscape all the while maintaining the essence of the original. A bit of inspiration can be found in cinematography and production design (it’s brilliant). Also, a huge shoutout to the costume designer.
The office setting is well-executed and looks organic. The attempt to bring together both cultures (Japanese and Thai) is commendable.
There are also certain changes in characterization, especially in the supporting characters and second leads which works well.
The Cast of Cherry Magic (Thai)
The supporting cast is really good. Jan Ployshompoo Supasap as Pai and
Parn Thanaporn Wagprayoon as Dujdao make the office setting come alive.
The standouts in episode 1 were Sing Harit Cheewagaroon as Rock (who is reprising the role of the annoying coworker from the original; he is likeable here) and Junior Panachai Sriariyarungruang as Jinta who is excellent in getting his part accurately.
Tay Tawan and New are wonderful actors in their own right but this is going to be challenging for them to match the nuanced performances of their Japanese counterparts. Since the making style is a bit different here, it wouldn’t be that much of a problem.
Tay Tawan’s portrayal of the gentlemanly and immaculately neat and romantic Karan is convincing.
I was a little apprehensive about New because we have always seen him nail comedy but here it’s a little intense. But he exceeded my expectations and his portrayal of the kind and clumsy Achi engages the audience.
Overall, the first episode of Cherry Magic was entertaining. I hope it lives up to the expectations in the upcoming episodes.
