The Sign (Langsanghorn) is an ongoing Thai BL series starring Billy Patchanon Ounsa-ard and Babe Tanatat Phanviriyakool. It is adapted from the novel “Premonition” (ลางสังหรณ์) by I-Rain-Yia. The series is directed by A Natthaphong Wongkaweepairod. Here is our review of The Sign BL Series.

The Sign has an unusual plot for a BL narrative which is great because everything that comes out of the industry recently has been very saturated. It is a reincarnation love story but what makes it better is that it is also a crime thriller.

The makers have given so much thought to the production so that it looks as realistic as possible for its setting.

The Good (The Sign BL)

The setting is phenomenal with its impeccable production design. The CGI, especially in the initial episodes are good (Freen looks alluring in her guest appearance).

The music by Teeraphong Prathumrat, Ekkaphop Khiaoyasit, and Keng Tachaya Prathumwan is perfect for the narrative (I will be listening to the title track on a loop for a long time).

The most outstanding aspect of the technical side is the cinematography by
Jintaphap Sakkaew
. Every frame is creative and the use of colours is praiseworthy.

A Natthaphong Wongkaweepairod‘s experience as an acting coach is obvious in the series. He could bring out the best from the actors. This is a different genre from Gap the Series and he has already proven his versatility with this one.

Performances

The Sign is a perfectly cast series. Every actor including the supporting and the minor characters is brilliant.

Looknam Orntara Poolsak plays the most innovative character. She must have been the most interesting character on paper. I wish she had more screen time.

May Yada Watcharamusik‘s role as Phaya’s sister is remarkable. She shares natural chemistry with Billy.

Akk Akarat Nimitchai‘s role as the head of the team is memorable. He plays the enigmatic, restrained and strict captain with surprising ease (It must have been difficult for the young actors to match his energy).

Billy Patchanon Ounsa-ard‘s as the cheeky and hotheaded Phaya is impressive. His performance especially in the dream sequences and romantic scenes is remarkable.

However, the star of the show for me is undoubtedly Babe Tanatat Phanviriyakool who plays Tharn. You can feel his pain, confusion, dilemma, helplessness and determination even in his minute moves. His eyes can convey a million emotions within seconds. His body language is perfect for a relatively young actor. He is one of the most promising Thai actors I have seen in recent times. His performance is very controlled – not too much, not too little. His emotional scenes are something to look out for.

The Underwhelming Aspects of The Sign BL

The Sign would have been a perfect series if not for some flaws.

  1. Some scenes feel repetitive and the editing could have been better.
  2. The scenes involving the past lives of the characters look nothing short of a joke. The production and the writing there could have been better.
  3. Wansarat appearing as a woman is just there to confuse the viewer. It doesn’t make much sense (but then anything can happen in a dream, right).
  4. The villain is not powerful enough. He is the most underwritten character in the series. He doesn’t feel all that threatening (the actor is good but the makers have failed to use him well).
  5. Some performances are overdone.

Final Thoughts

The Sign is a refreshing experience because of its storyline. It could have been a contender for the awards next year if not for the half-baked storyline of the past lives of the characters. That’s the most important thing for a series like this. But The Sign is a great one-time watch.
