Wednesday Club Thai Series Review: Lazy Execution Kills a Great Premise

Wednesday Club Thai Series/ Initial Review (Ep 1-3)

Wednesday Club has an interesting premise. But that’s not enough. It stars a pool of young talent from GMMTV. The series is written by Manow Waneepan Ounphoklang and directed by  K Chainarong Tampong. Here is our first take and review of Wednesday Club Thai series.

The Storyline of Wednesday Club

The series is about a group of young people in a university coming together. They are bound by one common thing – they are all middle children.

But, that’s not enough to form true friendships. Is it? These people have different temperaments and sensibilities. Their differences would probably be the turning point in the plot.

The Execution

What seems to be the culprit is mainly writing. There is so much telling and not showing, in the screenplay. Even the best of actors look funny onscreen when they talk about their “problems” (the rich people’s problems).

The Opening Scenes

The opening scene with Phuwin, Kay and the other actors creates some sort of intrigue. But, that’s where it ends. What follows isn’t intriguing enough.

The scene with two actors running naked is there to create an awe in the audience. There is no other purpose for that. So, it becomes outright silly.

The Chemistry Between the Actors in Wednesday Club

The friendship between the characters Kong and Pali looks forced. There is no organic chemistry between them at least in the first three episodes. It seems like there is nothing on paper to guide the actors.

There aren’t enough moments for a character to fall in love with another. So, when he is heartbroken, it has no impact.

The characters are not given enough time to breathe. It’s just jumping from one scene into another scene and then into another.

The Editing and Background Score

The editing could have been better. It is not seamless. To make the dramatic moments worse there is a tacky background score that runs through the edit. The music is merged in all the wrong moments.

The Performances in Wednesday Club

Wednesday Club has an interesting line of actors but even they cannot save a loosely written screenplay.

Ohm Pawat Chittsawangdee attempts a character he probably hasn’t played before – the kind and troubled Kong. But his performance falls short in scenes that demand chemistry.

Same can be said about Nani Hirunkit Changkham. It’s high time the actor played something different that isn’t dark and disturbed. (and for God’s sake give him something that is not black to wear). But that might not be happening soon since the trailer of Frenemy (2024) just dropped.

Film Rachanun Mahawan plays the vibrant and sweet Tam with an infectious smile beautifully. She is like a breath of fresh air and her screen presence is undeniable. She immediately lights up the screen whenever she appears.

Phuwin Tangsakyuen is playing quite a mature character for his age and he does it with ease. I read somewhere that the character is similar to Boston (Only Friends). As someone who has watched both series, I can say for sure that they are entirely different from each other.

Piploy Kanyarat Ruangrung looks promising as the seductive and headstrong May. The only problem is that her character is a trope we have seen a million times before.

Kay Lertsittichai is probably one of the most underrated actors in GMMTV (his performance in Home School was just fire). He stands out from the rest of the cast with his performance.

He plays the poor yet ambitious Mac with brilliant body language that suits the character. As viewers, we can’t help but feel for him.

Final Thoughts

This series could have been so much more if executed properly. It has an intriguing plot but it becomes nothing but a series of cliches the way it is created. Let’s see if this changes in the upcoming episodes.
