The Uncomfortable and the Unexpected: Fukushuu no Miboujin J-Drama Review

Review of Episodes 1-2: The Uncomfortable and the Revenge

The series opens with a wedding scene where something unexpected happens and there is utter chaos. In complete contrast to the white wedding gown is the black attire of the guests, as if they have come for a funeral. Through all the confusions going on, we see a woman, dressed in black, smiling a victorious and enigmatic smile. This scene perfectly sets the mood of the series. We know that we are in for some uncomfortable and unexpected watching experience.

Suzuki Mitzu, the protagonist is like an angel in the new company she has joined. She is dressed in plain white clothes which might show to the world how pure she is. But she is such an enigma to the viewers right from the beginning. She is extremely beautiful, often gloomy and speaks less. Her actions and why she does what she does forms the main storyline.

Although this is a revenge story, it talks about a very important social issue. And with each scene, the tension increases. We witness some uncomfortable and shocking scenes on screen. There is lot more to witness and lot more scope for the characters and the story to develop. The revenge is not your usual ‘eye for an eye’ revenge, but it is played out more psychologically.

The writing by Tomoko Akutsu is very fresh; the protagonist is given a laid back quality even when she is going on with her revenge plans. She must be the most calm avenger you might come across. Matsumoto Wakana plays Mitzu with unbelievable poise and control. In short, Fukushuu no Miboujin is very much watchable and fascinating.
