Moonlight Chicken, the much-awaited BL series finally released to the international audience a year after its first trailer was released. The series stars Mix Sahaphap Wongratch and Earth Pirapat Watthanasetsiri. The screenwriters are Best Kittisak Kongka and Aof Noppharnach Chaiwimol who have also directed the series. Here is my first take on Moonlight Chicken.
The Title “Moonlight Chicken”
I was quite apprehensive when I first heard the title of the series. It is not something that would necessarily attract an audience because it sounds tacky. But, after watching the first episode, I understand why the makers stuck to this title and you will see the title from a new perspective when you watch the first episode.
The Writing
The first episode was, in one word, beautiful. The writing is incredible and there are some solid sequences which prove this. Even the minutest detail is there for a reason. Say, for example, when you are shown two phone chargers in close-up, you are hinted at something. The audience is never spoon-fed and we are shown things instead of being told.
The storyline is straightforward. It shows the lives of ordinary people, their mundane daily life and also probably a beautiful, yet complicated love story. It is very refreshing to watch something like this.
The Making
The filmmaking here is exquisite with gorgeous visuals of midnight and the romance that blooms in silence and darkness of the night. Aof Noppharnach Chaiwimol has used some extremely beautiful montages in his storytelling and they are simply stunning. There is a two-minute long single shot after the opening sequence which shows the film-making genius. We are given a direct immersive experience through this.
I loved Aof Noppharnach Chaiwimol’s previous works; A Tale of Thousand Stars and Bad Buddy. And yet, it feels like this is directed by a different filmmaker. All these series are nothing like each other. And his craft only gets better with his every work. At this point, he is my favourite Thai director. I can watch anything which has his name associated with it.
The Cinematography
Moonlight Chicken also has brilliant cinematography. The camera movements are deliberate here and it demands the attention of the audience.. The immersive experience that we would feel has also got to do with the camera work. A major part of the series takes place at night. Every frame is delightful.
The Cast and Score
Moonlight Chicken is carried by an incredible cast. The central characters are played by Earth and Mix and both of them have done a commendable job. Every scene with Mix adds to the curiosity factor. The actor has expressive eyes and has adapted well to this character. Earth’s performance here was a real surprise. I think the actor can do more when given mature characters like this.
The supporting cast is phenomenal. But, Fourth” Nattawat Jirochtikul stood out in the first episode. The actor is such a natural in front of the camera. Moonlight Chicken has a soulful soundtrack which elevates the making. The OST and the background score are soothing.
I loved the first episode. And I am excited for the next episode. Moonlight Chicken looks like a slow burn which could give you a sublime experience. You can watch the series on YouTube.
Arya is a curious soul and nerd who loves books and cinema. You can read her articles on Medium. You can also follow her on Instagram where she talks about her favourite books and movies.
