Midnight Motel: A Gripping Dark Comedy

Thai series Midnight Motel is a dark comedy in which three ordinary people witness a murder accidentally which put their lives in danger. It is a mini-series of the Thai compilation “Midnight Series” which consists of 3 mini-series. Midnight Motel is written by Pass Patthanakumjon, Korjai Ouiwatanapong and Arm Jakkapat Songpolnopajorn and directed by Momo Athip Vichuchaianan. It consists of 6 episodes.

Mote(Off Jumpol Adulkittiporn) and Doy (Louis Thanawin Teeraphosukarn) are best friends who got in trouble by exposing an online gambling site and they become debtors of 10 million Baht. Kat (Jan Ployshompoo Supasap) is a sex worker who has many debts and she desperately needs money to escape to Canada. Sun (Mond Tanutchai Wijitvongtong) is Kat’s employer who occasionally mistreats her.

Kat and Mote meet each other due to an incident and they along with Doy start an app called ‘Takkrub’. Takkrub is an app used to book sex workers online. They coincidentally witness the murder of a rich guy named Pat (who was their regular customer and agreed to invest in their app) which turns their life upside down. Sun also becomes a part of this drama unknowingly. The incidents followed by the murder are portrayed humorously, although it will not be funny when it happens in your life.

I think Midnight Motel is executed brilliantly by the makers in just 6 episodes. I really loved the cinematography. The background score and the theme music were also captivating. Most of the characters are fleshed out in this short mini-series. The actors were amazing in portraying their roles. I especially loved the combination scenes of Kat, Mote and Doy. However, the show stealer must be Mond who played Sun. His character is very complicated and he portrayed it convincingly.

The supporting actors have also done justice to their characters. Pae Daweerit Chullasapya who played Jay and Victor Chatchawit Techarukpong who played Pat were fantastic.

If you are a fan of dark comedies, Midnight Motel should definitely be on your watchlist.
