Review of Today’s Webtoon
Today’s webtoon is a South Korean Television series based on the Japanese Manga series Juhan Shuttai! created by Naoko Mazda. Ju Hyun Joo, Cho Ye Rang and Lee Jae Eun are the screen writers of the series. The drama is directed by Jo Soo Won. Se Jeong Kim, Nam Yoon-su and Daniel Choi play the major characters in the drama.
On Ma Eum, a National Judo team member quits Judo due to an unfortunate incident and tries to build her career from scratch by becoming a webtoon editor. Apart from being an ardent webtoon and comic books fan, she does not have any knowledge related to webtoons.
Why you should watch Today’s Webtoon?
The Screenplay
The screenplay is brilliant. On Ma Eum’s character is well developed. Showing her family dynamics and the backstory about her quitting Judo helped the audience to understand the character better. There are a handful of characters who have become close to my heart. For instance, Shin Dye-ryuk (Kim Do-Hoon), the webtoon artist. His past trauma and the unravelling of it are captured beautifully in the series. Lim Dong Hee, a webtoon artist who could not debut even after working as an assistant for 10 years was heart touching. I loved the fact that the writers did not let the ‘triangle love’ eat up the whole plot. The romance remained a subplot throughout the drama
The Supporting Cast
Although the main cast have done an amazing job in portraying their characters, the supporting cast was exceptional. Baek Suk Kwang who portrayed the role of Lim Dong Hee, a struggling webtoon artist has done a phenomenal job. Park Ho-San, as always has delivered a mind-boggling performance. Kim Gab Soo who plays, a senior cartoon artist (Baek Eo Jin) stepping into the webtoon industry and technology was also brilliant. Kim Do Hoon who plays Shin Dye-ryuk, a passionate webtoon artist with a traumatic past has stolen the show whenever he appeared on the screen.
The Action Sequences
The action sequences in the drama were brilliant. The first scene of the drama is a phenomenal action sequence. Although the scenes were short, it was a treat to watch those scenes.
What Could have been Better?
There are some characters which, in my opinion, could have been written better. I think the characters of deputy editor Seok Ji-Hyung (Daniel Choi) and the editor Jang Man-Cheol (Park Ho-San) could have been explored a little more. The thing I did not like in the drama is the unwanted romantic angle. The romance has no relevance and is completely unnecessary for story development. However, the writers have kept it as the subplot throughout and did not let it intervene with the main plot.
The series is a good watch with an excellent screenplay and many mind blowing performances from different artists. I would say you should go for it.
