Eternal Yesterday J-BL Review

Review of Episodes 1-4

Eternal Yesterday is the new Japanese BL series starring
Komiya Rio and Inoue Sora. The screenwriter and the director of the series is Kobayashi Keiichi. Even though the series is essentially a high school romance, it explores a very interesting idea and it is probabaly more than just that. This is a review of the first 4 episodes of Eternal Yesterday.

The series does not necessarily follow a linear structure. There is juxtaposition of past and present with a few flashbacks but it is not complicated. Although there could be a bit of a confusion in the chronology of events, it can be overlooked.

The protagonists here are completely opposite in character and they are strangely attracted to each other. There happens quite a bizarre event in the first episode itself and the story progresses from there. This is a concept that we have never seen before at least in TV. There are supernatural elements also but they are not glorified as in a Korean drama.

The bizarre incident and the supernatural or fantasy elements are so raw and natural here, which is an interesting aspect of Japanese contents as I have noticed. It is as raw as it can get. There is definitely a willing suspension of disbelief, as we watch the progression of the story. Because even the most unbelievable aspect feels like human.

The overall execution is good and the background score effectively complements the making. Another aspect which I like very much in J-dramas are the use of sound and sound mixing. It is very authentic. If we are witnessing a scene involving rain, you feel as if it is happening in your surroundings. It is a remarkable and original aspect of Japanese film making.

The actors are exceptionally talented. Komiya Rio portrays the chatty and funny Koichi with an incredible ease. Inoue Sora is impeccable as Mitsuru. He displays a sort of vulnerability and determination as he plays the character.

Overall, Eternal Yesterday as the name suggests has something new to offer. It is a slow burn. You can watch it on Viki.
