REVIEW OF EPISODE 1
Episode 1 of the Thai drama ‘180 degree longitude passes through us’ talks about complicated relationships. It is written and directed by Punnasak Sukee. The major characters are played by Pond Ponlawit Ketprapakorn, Mam Kathaleeya McIntosh and Nike Nitidon Pomsuwan.
The Father-Son Relationship
The drama starts with a twenty-year-old guy named Wang (Pond Ponlawit Ketprapakorn) narrating his relationship with his late father and him. After his father dies, the father’s dream of travelling from the north pole to the south pole became the dream of the son. Globe has a great significance in the story. Globes connect him with his father. Wang always carries a small globe with him. The title of the series “180 Degree Longitude passes through us” is also related to Globe.
The Mother-Son Relationship
The mother Sasiwimol aka Mol (Mam Kathaleeya McIntosh) is a successful film director. Though Wang grew up in a boarding school, he has a very good relationship with his mother. They are like best friends. But, the mother do not want him to leave her. So, for the sake of his mother, the son has not yet travelled outside Bangkok.
There are also secrets between mother and son. The mother is not open about her relationship status with her son.
The Mystery
The son accompanies his mother to a remote shooting location. And they get lost in the middle of nowhere. There, they meet an old friend of mother named In (Nike Nitidon Pomsuwan) after many years. There is some hidden past between Wang’s father and In.
The drama has more secrets to reveal. Everybody seems to be hiding something from each other. Although the mother’s character seems to be funny, she also has some secrets. The sudden disappearance of In from the family and having no contact for many years also points out to something mysterious.
The episode 1 of “180 Degree Longitude passes Through Us’ made me curious to find out more about their lives. How did the father die? Why did In disappear for many long years? The answers are yet to be revealed in the coming episodes.
The Uncle-Nephew Relationship
The uncle -nephew relationship seems to be the most complex. They might not be “real” uncle and nephew. Although the mother addresses her son and In as nephew and uncle, their gazes towards each other tell a different story. I think there is a love story in store between In and Wang. I am also eager to watch how it is going to unravel all the hidden secrets in the family.
The mood of the series is not pleasant. It is a bit gloomy. The melancholic background music and the darker colour theme adds to this mood. Every character seems to be sad at times.
I would recommend this drama to those who love watching complex relationship stories. And I am an ardent fan of this kind of drama which is a bit moody yet has a good story.
