Between Us BL Review: Spin Off of UWMA

Review of Ep.1

Between Us is probably the most anticipated Thai BL series of the year. It was a much awaited spin off to the very popular 2019 series Until We Meet Again. Between Us is the story of Win and Team from UWMA and the series probably came about because of the popular demand. The actors really stood out in UWMA so much so that the makers had to create a spin off for their characters. The first episode is already on air and this is my review and thoughts about the series.

Between Us is more pleasant than UWMA. It has the same university setting and time period. We get to see the story from the perspectives of Win and Team. Some minor characters from UWMA have more screen space here. The humor scenes are much better than the slapstick, unnecessary scenes from UWMA.

In the first episode, we get a sneak peek into the character of the protagonists. Their characterization was so peripheral in UWMA. Here, we get to see their backstory, their inner turmoil and their pain. One striking scene for me in this episode was the conversation between Win and Dean, for we get an idea about how they understand each other as friends.

Between Us also follows the love at first sight trope. But there are only limited combination scenes for the main characters in the first episode. The main flaw of the series lies in the writing. Instead of focusing on the main love story, the first episode gives undue importance to the protagonists from UWMA which actually does not give the screenplay enough space to focus on the relationship of Win and Team.

The progression of the story in the first episode does not make any sense because, there aren’t enough moments between the protagonists to end up the way they did in the first episode. The emotions and the acting are on point but the writing has some gaps which could have been filled if they omitted the inclusion of scenes from UWMA. But we can expect answers to some probable questions we have in our mind in the upcoming episodes.

The cast is brilliant. We have some new characters and actors in Between Us. Sood Yacht Patsit Permpoonsavat, Tae Weerapat Toemmaneerat,
Art Pakpoom Juanchainat and Ryu Pakphum Jitpisutsiri really brings in great comic energy to the series. However, the standout performers were really Boun Noppanut Guntachai and Prem Warut Chawalitrujiwong as Win and Team.

It is also contradictory that Between Us completely ignores consent while having an entire scene based on consent right after. There is an obvious inconsistency in writing and characterization. But the execution seems better than UWMA. For someone who has not watched UWMA, it would be difficult to understand the universe and the characters.

You can watch Between Us on YouTube.
