The Eclipse Review
The Eclipse is a Thai BL drama set in a high school named Suppalo where rules are outdated, yet students are compelled to follow them. The setting is dystopian where students have no freedom of thought or expression and are suppressed by a set of outdated rules and traditions. It is directed by Golf Tanwarin Sukkhapisit. The lead roles are played by First Kanaphan Puitrakul and Khaotung Thanawat Ratanakitpaisan.
The Plot
The plot of the series is well thought out and executed. It is not just a high school love story, the main plot is the breaking of an outdated system. The LGBTQ rights are also discussed briefly in the drama. The system in the school treats LGBTQ people as abnormal which makes it difficult for Akk to accept his sexuality.
Akk ( played by First Kanaphan Puitrakul)is a student prefect who is controlled by the system in Suppalo. He worships the traditions and rules of the school and he wants to protect this system at any cost. A teacher named Chadok is the one who mentors him to become the perfect student prefect. Ayan (played by Khaotung Thanawat Ratanakitpaisan) is a transfer student who came to investigate the reason behind his uncle’s death. His uncle (Teacher Dika played by Ron Patarapon To-oun ) was a former teacher in Suppalo who committed suicide. Ayan believes that someone in school is responsible for his uncle’s death. At the end, he finds out everybody has been the victims of the system.
The story also talks about anxiety and depression disorders. Both Ayan and his uncle suffer from depression.
The Cast
One of the biggest strengths of the series is the cast. First and Khaotung who play the lead roles in the drama present phenomenal performances. First plays the role of Akk, a student prefect who is ready to do anything to protect the rules of Suppalo. Ayan played by Khaotung, on the other hand, is the disrupter, and whistleblower who wants to challenge the outdated rules of Suppalo. They are mind-blowing in emotional scenes. The chemistry between the two is also astonishing. The supporting cast including Louis Thanawin Teeraphosukarn, Neo Trai Nimtawat and AJ Chayapol Jutamas have also done justice to their characters. Louis Thanawin Teeraphosukarn plays a very interesting character in the series. He is neutral. He does not admire the rules of Suppalo. But he is not brave enough to stand up against the school. He is an ideal student who is the head of the class. Later his character develops with an interesting and surprising twist.
The Making
The making of the series is so artistic that we fall in love with several frames. The cinematography is mind-blowing. I loved the kissing scenes which are shot aesthetically. The scene with Akk and Ayan on the island during sunrise is brilliant.
The Eclipse is a must watch with many mind-blowing performances throughout. The series also educates us about various things. If you are a BL fan, you should never miss this masterpiece.
