Self Episode 1 Review
The episode 1 of Thai BL Self begins with a tragedy where a boy falls down from the top of a building while another boy points a gun at him. The makers Sorawit Meungkeaw and Too Aussada Likitboonma leave the mystery of death to unravel later and episode moves on to the story of Tang (Zen Burapa Thakulchunwirat), a high school student. Tang wants to become a solo artist. Quoting his own words “He would not let anything get in the way of his dream”. From his words and body language, it is evident that he is a very self centered boy. He has no consideration for others feelings. He is jealous when his friend May plays guitar better than him.
One day, Tang fails to see his reflection in the mirror mysteriously. He sees a strange boy (Neo played by Triton Teeradet Rungrueang) instead of his reflection. He has no idea what is going on. Nobody takes him seriously when he talks about this strange phenomenon to his friends. Later, on an online audition for artists, he ditches May by not allowing him to show his guitar skills. Thus May and Tang gets into a fight and May walks away from Tang.
From the first episode, I feel that ‘Self’ has much more to tell than a typical boys’ love story. There is a mystery to be resolved. I also would love to watch how a relationship changes a self centered boy.
I would surely watch the second episode. I would recommend this series if you would like to watch a refreshing BL drama.
