Thai BL First Take: My School President is a Fun Ride

Review of Episodes 1-3

My School President is an ongoing Thai BL series which is a refreshing high school romance. It has Gemini Norawit Titicharoenrak and
Fourth Nattawat Jirochtikul
in lead roles. The series is helmed by an incredible team who have created projects like Together, A Tale of Thousand Stars and Bad Buddy. The director of the series is  Au Kornprom Niyomsil who has assisted in ATOTS. The screenwriters are Pratchaya Thavornthummarut and Bee Pongsate Lucksameepong. Here is my first take on the series.

The Making

My School President is undoubtedly a well-written and well-executed series. It is adapted from the novel, My Boyfriend is the President. The producer of the series is  Aof Noppharnach Chaiwimol who is famous for directing series like A Tale of Thousand Stars and Bad Buddy which were driven by incredible storyline and execution. In his words, this is a series that they put together ambitiously in the model of previous high school romances which are fun, are of first love, friendship and music. And they have indeed succeeded phenomenally in bringing in all these aspects together.

The writers have done an incredible job in adapting the novel to a series which is enjoyable every moment. The way the first two episodes begin with dreams of each of the protagonists, the characterization and the way they have included elements like music, dance and friendship in moderate levels into this love story is praiseworthy. There is never a dull moment in the first three episodes.

Au Kornprom Niyomsil has executed the series in a very admirable way. The series is also a bit cartoonish which works well and is never over the top. The comedy scenes are all good and you keep watching the series with a default smile on your face. There is undeniable inspiration in the ballroom dance practice/ dream sequence which is very similar to the iconic scene in the Filipino BL Gaya Sa Pelikula.

The execution and cinematography reminds you of Together the Series. But, a comparison is not possible because My School President is already better than Together just in the first three episodes. Editing is also really applaudable.

The Music

Music is an important aspect of the series since the protagonist is a singer and his ambition and in turn the story drives on music. There is a new song in every episode and even the music performances are staged very organically. You do not even realize that there are many songs in the series because there is no moment of boredom. My favorite track so far is the OST “Come Closer” by Ford Arun.

The Cast

My School President has an incredible pool of young talent in it. The supporting cast is really good especially all the actors in the band (their bonding seems so real). Also Mark Pakin Kunaanuwit who plays the role of Tinn’s best friend really adds some flavor.

Gemini Norawit Titicharoenrak as the lovestruck, nerdy and smart Tinn delivers a commendable performance. The actor has got a charisma and a sort of a sophisticated mannerism which he blends so well into Tinn.

However, the standout performer in these episodes is undoubtedly
Fourth Nattawat Jirochtikul as Gun. He is so natural and has got immense enthusiasm and energy as he transforms to Gun. There is a certain ease with which he delivers dialogues and he has got an incredible singing and speaking voice which is perfect for the character.

In my opinion, My School President is one of the best BL series of 2022. It has got everything that you would want in a series and the lead actors have amazing chemistry.
