Thai BL couple TayNew’s latest release Peaceful Property is a horror-comedy series directed by Dome Jarupat Kannula. This is not a BL series as most fans anticipated. Peaceful Property with its half-baked horror element fails to scare the audience. Mook and Janhae are also playing major roles in the series. Peaceful Property was one of the top 5 on my watchlist since its announcement on GMMTV’s Up and Above last year. It was a fun watch but it did not satisfy the horror enthusiast in me who was looking forward to some jump scares and chills.
The Plot
Home (New), a rich spoiled brat returns to his homeland from the USA following the sudden death of his grandfather. He learns that he inherits most of the real estate of his grandfather and he wants to sell them all before returning. But there is a problem. All the properties his grandfather gave him are rumoured to be haunted. To add to this chaos, the news was accidentally leaked on Social Media by Peach (Tay) and his sister Pang Pang (Janhae) who visited their friend’s new home (which turned out to be Home’s property).
Home threatens them to exorcise all of his properties to get rid of the rumour and sell his properties as soon as possible. Mook plays an attorney who helps Home with legal advice. Thus the four of them and Home’s bodyguard form the ghost hunting team to exorcise the properties.
What I loved
The chemistry between the main cast is the one I loved most. Tay, New, Mook and Janhae were brilliant together as the ghost-hunting team. The comedy worked out perfectly because of this casting brilliance. The supporting actors were also amazing at their parts. I loved the cameos by other GMMTV actors like Foei, Perth, Force, Book, Cizee etc. I loved the unexpected twists in the story towards the end although the climax was expected.
The art team, makeup and the cinematographer have also done a fantastic job.
What I did not like
The horror factor totally failed to scare the audience. Apart from the disgusting look given to the ghosts, there was nothing to scare you in the series. We feel a sense of sympathy towards the ghosts rather than fear. I wish there were at least one ‘villain’ among the ghosts to scare the sh!t out of you. But all the ghosts were saints who tragically lost their lives. The horror element was absent from the middle towards the end. It became more of a family drama after that. So the ending was also disappointing.
The characters are not well written. The audience doesn’t get any information about the backstory of the brother-sister duo apart from the fact that the brother was formerly a chef and lost his job as he started seeing ghosts. Mook’s character has a back story which is not explored to its potential. Home’s past is also not explored well.
Is Peaceful Property Worth Watching?
If you’re looking for a fun comedy watch, you can definitely try watching this one. But if you want the thrills and chills of a horror series, you would be disappointed. Despite the predictable ending and underwhelming horror, it’s worth a watch.
