Miss Night and Day

Miss Night and Day Review: Come for Eunji, Stay for the Comedy

I loved Jung Eunji in Reply 1997. After that drama though, I could never find anything that did full justice to her potential. But Miss Night and Day comes close to it. Here is our review of the Netflix K-drama directed by  Lee Hyung Min.

Relatable Protagonist and Comedy

Though I started watching it for Eunji, the comedy in the drama is good enough to hook anyone. That’s probably the most well-written part of the series. I liked the mystery element too, which the whole plot centres on; it didn’t feel forced as in the recent superhit show Lovely Runner.

The first episode made me cry and laugh at the same time. You cannot help but feel pity for the protagonist who is in the most pathetic condition one can be in. She is going through a quarter-life crisis. The acting skills peak there because we don’t know if we should cry with her or laugh, seeing the utterly ridiculous situation that she is in. Anyone in their late twenties can relate to her.

The Cast

Choi Jin Hyuk and Baek Seo Hoo shine in their respective parts though their characters are a bit underwritten. Lee Jung Eun and Jung Eunji’s performances keep the show a success and help in “suspension of disbelief” in the viewer. The former is phenomenal as the energetic and warm Lim Sun.

The Underwhelming Romance

Let’s talk a little bit about the romance part now. There is nothing new to watch here since it repeats what we see in any other K-drama. Romance scenes and the chemistry between the actors seem forced. Also, I would really like to see a romance that doesn’t involve the drunk heroine acting cute in front of the hero.

But certain role reversals in the romance work (the heroine making the first move).

Everything that is wrong with the K-drama romances happens here too. That includes the female lead falling for the problematic male lead (who secretly plants a tracking device for her ‘safety’) to the more charming and less problematic second lead. I really wish Baek Seo Hoo‘s part was meaty. The love triangle happens way too suddenly.

Though it’s not a perfect series and has many plotholes, Miss Night and Day is interesting enough if you are looking for something enjoyable.
