The latest Kdrama Under The Queen’s Umbrella released on Netflix has every ingredient to hook the audience to the screen. Under the Queen’s Umbrella is a female-centric period drama with Kim Hye-soo playing the lead as the queen. This Korean drama is written by Park Ba Ra and directed by Kim Hyung Shik.

The queen has five sons, the eldest being the crown prince. She was leading a good life until one day she realizes her eldest son, the crown prince is severely ill. The crown prince was the only one among her sons who has a good reputation. She learns that if she lets her guard down, not only will her sons lose the throne but their lives will also be in line. That’s when she decides to go out of her way to protect her sons from those who are plotting against them.

The making of the series is excellent. Many shots plunged me into the screen. The camera movement in the very first scene of the drama was mind-boggling. There were brilliant scenes like Prince riding on the horse while dust flies onto the camera. Another shot which I loved was when Kin Hye-soo was walking in the rain with an umbrella. The shot in which the camera rotates 90 degree as it moves away from the queen while she is panicking in shock, was amazing.

I also loved the background score of the drama. It was so refreshing and at times very intense. It elevated some of the scenes very effectively. The actors’ performances were also brilliant. Kim Hye-soo as the queen was excellent in every way. She handles the emotional and humorous scenes effortlessly. Kim Hae-sook (Queen Dowager) was also outstanding as a crooked, power obsessed grandmother plotting against her own grandsons.

Under The Queen’s Umbrella has a good plot and a strong female portrayal. The story, screenplay and making seem to be excellent judging from the first two episodes released. I am eager to watch the coming episodes. I would recommend this for your watchlist.
