Kdrama ‘The Golden Spoon’ is Intriguing

The Golden Spoon: Episodes 1 & 2 review

The new South Korean TV series “The Golden spoon” depicts the life of a poor high school boy who switches his life with his rich classmate. The series is based on the famous webtoon “The Golden Spoon” by HD3. It is written by Kim Eun Hee and Yoon Eun Kyung and directed by Song Hyun Wook. Yook Sung Jae, Lee Jong Won, Jung Chae Yeon and Yeonwoo play the major characters.

The Plot

Lee Seung Cheon (Yook Sung Jae) is a high school student from a poor family. He goes to a school full of rich kids who always bully him because he is poor. The series begins by showing the busy life of a city filled with rich and poor people. Lee Seung Choen believes that the world is dominated by the those who are born with a golden spoon in their mouth.

The richest of his classmates is Hwang Taeyong (Lee Jong Won). His father owns a company worth 300 trillion won. As Lee Seung Cheon continues living a frustrated life, he comes across “The Golden Spoon” which has the power to change his life. He decides to use its power and switches his life with Hwang Taeyoung, even though it means he has to swap his loving parents. He has three chances to go back to his previous life. Would he use those chances? Or would he continue his life as Hwang Taeyoung and be a stranger to his parents?

The Cast

The casting of the drama is brilliant. Yook Sung Jae plays Lee Seung Cheon with utmost ease and his performance alone is enough to hook us into the drama. Lee Jong Won also does a remarkable job playing Hwang Taeyoung. I especially liked him after he becomes Lee Seung Cheon and is clueless about how to live as Lee Seung Cheon. His subtle humour in those scenes was excellent.

The Screenplay & Direction

Eloquent screenplay combined with Brilliant direction makes “The Golden Spoon” worth watching. The scenes in which the lives are swapped are so well written that at no moment we would think that it is impossible. The direction is also mind boggling. I loved the scene in which Lee Seung Cheon falls into the river. The shots under the water were awesome.

The well-written screenplay, brilliant direction, and excellent casting make this series worth your time. I would say it is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys watching a realistic drama with a little fantasy.
