Review of Episodes 1-6

About Youth is the latest addition to the Taiwanese BL universe. The series stars Jyun, Li Zhen Hao, Xu Shuo Ting and Andy Huang. About Youth is a fairly watchable series directed by Tsai Mi Chieh (the director of History 2).

The series does not have a solid plot or story. There is nothing innovative here; even the setting is a high school. But this is a coming-of-age story, hence the high school setting is justifiable. There are also many likeable factors which gives the series a soul of its own.

The Characters

The series is essentially about two boys getting acquainted in high school and gradually developing feelings for each other. But we also have the story of two other boys which is a parallel to the main story. In the subplot, we see a high schooler who is a cross-dresser and another boy who is confused yet non-judgmental. This part of the story is very refreshing to watch because in most cases such characters are seldom developed and are often stereotyped.

The opening shot is exquisite and the time leap is natural. Some scenes do not progress organically from one to another and we are often left confused as to what just happened. That is the main flaw of the series. The writing and editing do not seem to fill in the obvious gaps.

The actors are really good. The lead actors have natural chemistry. Both portray the innocence of first love and the mental agony as much as they can. The lack of depth in writing becomes a problem here too. The characters are not properly developed and there are some minor characters which serve no purpose at all.

Overall, About Youth is a fairly watchable series. It is neither too pleasant nor too grave. All these aspects are not properly developed. Yet, it makes for a moderately watchable ride.
