You’re Nothing Special Review in English
You’re Nothing Special of Netflix is a Spanish Original Series (Tu No Eres Especial) created by Estíbaliz Burgaleta. Amaia, a sixteen-year-old girl moves back to her mother’s hometown Salabarria after her grandmother’s death. Her mother losing her job and getting separated from her boyfriend (who is the father of Amaia’s sister) are also the reasons for them moving to Salabarria. She has a nine-year-old sister named Ona. Amaia hates her life in Salabarria and she wants to move back to Barcelona.
In her school, she learns that her grandmother (whom she hasn’t met), was a renowned witch in Salabarria. She finds three new friends in school- Javi, Lucia and Zhao in school. They (especially Javi) tells her about her grandmother’s stories. As her friends compel her, she tries her hand at witchcraft using her grandmother’s things. She charges her classmates money to read cards and cast spells for them. Soon her popularity grows in school. She starts using her power for her personal needs; for instance, to attract a boy she liked.
Good Aspects
The Plot
The series has a fresh plot. Although, the setting of the series is a typical high school, the plot gives some freshness to the story. Amaia trying her hand at reading cards and casting spells makes it interesting. It makes the audience curious to find out if she really has the power possessed by her grandmother.
The Cast
The casting is brilliant. Dèlia Brufau fits perfectly into the role of Amaia. At first Amaia seems to be a naive high school girl. But towards the end, we can see that she is not so naive after all. She does everything under her control to get what she wants. Actors who played the Javi, Lucia and Zhao have also done an amazing job in playing their respective roles. Asier, the guy whom Amaia likes, his girl friend Irene are also perfect fit for the characters. I also loved the girl who played Amaia’s sister Ona.
The Cinematography
The beauty of Salabarria is captured very beautifully in the series. The nature and the greenery is breathtaking.
Underwhelming Aspects
The Ending
The series starts off good and build up the audience’s expectations without hesitating. But the ending was disappointing. The magic which we expected to see did not happen. It was an okay ending to the story, but was hardly a surprising firecracker.
Would I Recommend?
You’re Nothing special is not as mind-boggling as expected, yet is a watchable flick. You can watch the entire season in three hours, that’s what I loved the most about it. You can watch it on Netflix.
