What if

What if (Thai) is about Young Love

Review of Episodes 1-2

The series What if has a running time of not more than twelve minutes per episode. It is the story of two boys Smart and Peach; childhood friends who start to have feelings for each other. The story is very simple for a miniseries like this one. What if is about young love and shared dreams.

The sentiments are same as that of the recently released My Only 12%, but What if lacks depth which can be blamed on its running time. My Only 12% is incredible in making and the actors have natural chemistry. That seems to be lacking here. The majority of the screen time is shared by the two lead actors. The supporting cast are merely caricatures. But the actors have done a fairly good job.

The problem lies mainly in characterization. The story itself is cliched. But that would not have been a problem if the execution was good. We cannot really distinguish between the two main characters other than the fact that one is older to the other. The way they grow up to be and the way they were in their childhood are contradictory. There are many scenes which are repetitive. Especially the scenes involving guitar. We do not really feel for the protagonist when he talks about his dream.

Despite the short running time the show has, it still could have done better. The childhood scenes were beautiful but the sentiments seem to be lacking when the scene shifts (the scene shift was good) and the characters grow up. And What if seems to be heading towards a predictable and uninteresting direction. The series is cute but lacks the emotions to connect with the viewer.
