Nostalgia, Bonds and Relationships (Review of Episodes 1-2)
Good Old Days is an anthology series focusing on characters from different walks of life whose stories revolve around a central point and the series brims with nostalgia. The cast of this series are the most popular faces in Thai television which gets you excited, so obviously there is a conscious attempt in making the series popular.
Keeping the commercial intentions of the creators aside, Good Old Days seems to have a soul of its own. It is an amalgamation of the stories of people whom you might come across in your life. These stories could be yours and mine as much as these are of the characters on screen.
The Feel-Good Factor and the Memory Shop
In the first episode itself we see the narrator who is telling these stories as if they are his own. He is probably an unreliable narrator. He runs a shop called Memory Shop. We do not know for sure how he knows these stories or if he is making them up to sell his products. There is humor and beauty in this completely disconnected narration.
We are introduced to the first story and the three main characters in the first two episodes. It is a rather simple story-line which talks about bonds and relationships, yet is so mundane. Fah Yongwaree Anilbol perfects the character of Mint with ease. Lee Thanat Lowkhunsombat plays Phu who is afraid to form new relationships. The actor is good but he has a default pleasant face which serves as a disadvantage to him. You cannot really connect with his ‘disconnect’ or the pain he is going through.
The good thing about the first two episodes is that the bonds and relationships are not the usual human relationships. It is more than that. Good Old Days is good enough to hook you till the end. It is very soulful and brims with nostalgia.
