Thai TV Series ‘The Shipper’ Review

The Shipper is a Thai TV series written by Mai Aticha Tanthanawigrai, Parkpoom Wiboonronnarong, Mook Jarinee Thanomyat, Rattanang Tulawan and directed by Mai Aticha Tanthanawigrai. The Shipper is about a girl called Pan who loves to ship her male seniors Way and Kim who are best friends with each other. Pan and her best friend Soda write a fiction about Way and Kim becoming lovers while Way already has a girlfriend in real life. Their fiction almost expels Way from school and Kim ends up saving him from expelling.

The angel of death reaps the souls of Kim and Pan by mistake. When she pushes them back to earth she makes another mistake by switching their body. Pan uses this opportunity to make her ship real. Many complications occur in the mean time. Her friend Khet turned out to be Kim’s younger brother. Khet has feelings for Pan. Later she learns that Kim is not as good as she thought he was and tries to mess up the love story of Way and Kim.

Good & Bad Aspects

The Story

The plot and the storyline of ‘The Shipper” are brilliant. The body switching, unravelling of Kim’s mysteries, etc. were really good. However, there were some loopholes in the series. Way confesses his love for Kim after the body switching and he does not realize that Kim’s body is occupied by someone else until someone spoon-feeds him the whole story. And he also enjoyed the moments with Pan in Kim’s body. He couldn’t understand the changes in his best friend’s behaviour. The makers also messes with audiences by adding some moments between Kim & Pan, Way & Khet and Way & Pan. It confuses the audiences about who has feelings for whom.

The Ending

The ending of the series was a little disappointing. Although it was Pan throughout in the series in Kim’s body, audiences were much more invested in the return of Kim to his body. That never happened. The romance did not occur between Way and Kim although they both loved each other. I think Kim’s death was an unnecessary plot twist in the series. Way and Kim could be given a happy ending in the series. And there was nothing to be proved by killing off Kim.

The Cast

The Shipper stands out for its brilliant casting. All the actors were amazing in their roles, especially First Kanaphan Puitrakul. He plays Kim and Pan after body switching. He effortlessly carries on both these roles with his amazing acting skills. Prigkhing Sureeyares Yakares plays the role of Pan. Fluke Pusit Dittapisit plays Way and Ohm Pawat Chittsawangdee plays Khet. Both Fluke and Ohm were mind-blowing in their respective roles. Piploy Kanyarat Ruangrung plays Soda and Jennie Panhan plays the Angel of Death. The combination scenes between Jennie and First were hilarious.

Jennie Panhan as Angel of Death in The Shipper

I loved the series although I am a bit disappointed in the way it ended. The series cannot be categorized into a BL as it is the Shipper’s story. I also loved the guest appearance of Off Jumpol Adulkittiporn and Gun Atthaphan Phunsawat in the series. I would recommend everyone to watch this series.
