First Take: The Warp Effect is a Unique Comedy

Review of Episode 1

The Warp Effect is a newly released Thai series with New Thitipoom Techa-apaikhun playing the central character Alex. The series has a few people as creators: The directors are  Jojo Tichakorn Phukhaotong and  Ninew Pinya Chookamsri and the screenwriters are Game Kirati KumsatChim Sedthawut InboonChalermpong Udomsilp and  Jojo Tichakorn Phukhaotong. The first episode has some interesting moments. So, here is my review of the first episode of The Warp Effect.

The first episode begins quite abruptly with Alex (New), a teenage boy in a ‘massage’ parlor with a client. The reason for Alex’s being there stems from a supposed curse and a ring that his mother gave him, which reminds him of some strange promise. There is utter chaos soon and that is it with the opening scene.

Cut two; We are introduced to Alex’s household which consists only of men. Then we see Alex in school, playing the stereotype of a nerd along with his friends, also being bullied by the popular kids (again the stereotypical sports guy).

Some Relevant Scenes

There are so many moments in the episode which are very relevant. Like the Sex-ed scene in which the students are taught about consent. It is a rare scene to happen especially in a Thai series. Kudos to the writers for creating a scene like that.

The writing also touches upon the LGBTQIA+ narrative with a lesbian couple and a closeted gay teenager. But one thing I did not like in the writing though, was the way the characters are introduced, almost spoon feeding the audience through voice-overs of the protagonist.

The Cast

The actors here though except may be for Phuwin are not playing the parts of their age in the first episode. New and Fah play similar characters here; sort of this happy-go-lucky teenagers. Not for once do we think about the fact that they are much older people in real life. Fah especially displays a noteworthy performance and we can see a genuine effort in her mannerisms and gestures, to fit into the mold of a teenager in which she has succeeded.

Jan’s character is really interesting here. She does well what she does best; this extroverted, hyperactive teenager who is a tomboy. She really shines in her scenes. Another impressive performance in the first episode was that of Sing Harit Cheewagaroon.

Overall, The Warp Effect had a very impressive first episode which could hook the viewers. There was just the right amount of suspense and mystery and an interesting storyline executed nicely.
